"To think too long about doing a thing often becomes its undoing." Eva Young

In the spirit of procrastination, I'm delaying work on animation to update this here blog. It's been a good long time since I last posted and I have no excuse. I've got a bunch of work that could have been on here already, but alas I have to rescan them. Anyway, enough of my useless chatter. Here as some pages from my new toned sketchbook. Enjoy

Inspiration

I've been reading Brandon Graham's blog lately (http://royalboiler.livejournal.com/) and he's got a ton of things just about manga. He has reopened my eyes to great storytelling on that side of the world (i became such a hater from seeing such cookie cutter stories), and he's got me totally hip to this creator Naoki Urasawa.

Here's some videos of an interview he did. It's great.

Sketch Dump

Nothing much to report other than new boss at my housing job. She's already getting on the nerves of all the workers. I understand how Jay Cutler feels after Josh McDaniels came in. Anyway, here's just some sketches from my book. Some of them are life drawings 2, 5, and 10 minutes.

“It's not necessarily the amount of time you spend at practice that counts; it's what you put into the practice.” Eric Lindros

Today will be a short post seeing as it's finals week and I have tons to do. This post I'm including another daily painting, my late entry for IllustrationFriday.com (boy I need to finish these on time), and a sketchbook page I tried to color digitally. I've got to start adopting Bobby Chiu's advice for laziness. "When your voice tells you to take a break, that you're tired, or it's getting late, you need to PUNCH IT IN THE FACE! Then tell your voice to sit in the corner and wait awhile 'til your done." He's been saying that on his Chiustream casts he's been doing lately. If you get a chance to sit in one, you should. He's an inspiring hard worker and is nice enough to answer questions while he's streaming. In fact he answered a question of mine regarding sacrifices to personal life (relationships, friends, etc) as you focus on art. He said that sometimes you only keep bad relationships because of a common thing like going to bars or drinking. On the inside though, it's not much of a connection and if you lose people like that, it's okay. You will find people that share the same interests as you as you continue to better yourself. He said this based off of his own life so it was really nice to hear this. Anyway, back to work.

“An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching.” Mahatma Gandhi

Two more weeks to go and this quarter will be finished. It always surprises me how fast they go by. Most importantly, I always feel like I don't have much to show for it, besides all my sketchbook pages. It's weird too, because this quarter I feel I haven't been sketching as much as I would like. Instead, I've been writing down a lot more ideas, concepts, and projects that I'd like to get started on.
One such project is a weekly comic based off of my fantasy football notes. This, being the first year playing in my family's league, I'm pretty excited. As of this writing, Week 1 is almost done, and barring any kind of craziness for Monday night's games, I should have my first win. As a first timer, I think I'm learning how to manage my team well. I've got a ton of post it notes on my desk with players to watch for, key match ups, and things I should do for next week. This kind of "serious" note taking made me think, I might as well put my creative juices to work and create something for others to see. It's made me a better fan of football games and just more enthusiastic about teams that are sometimes boring. Plus, I can always illustrate some smack talk for my opponents in the coming weeks. I can't wait to get started.
Besides that, I don't think I've got much to add other than some new sketchbook pages. Have at it!

These two pages were done in the moleskin I bring to church. On one side of the book, I write down the day's sermon and the other side, I usually have a blank page. In an effort to paint more, I'm going to paint for 20-30 minutes everyday before I sleep. This week I'm starting out easy and a fruit a day. Hopefully I can keep it up and if I start to slack, please get on my case.

This was supposed to be my entry for Illustration Friday's theme, "Magnify". I thought of how some people tend to make a small problem bigger than it is. So, this girl broke a nail and is Godzilla exploding around her. Made me laugh and I like that watery texture.

"I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that's why I succeed." Michael Jordan

Today, President Obama gave a speech about education. Not only was it very powerful and inspiring, but it was something I really needed to hear. I'm posting it below in hopes that it may move you as it has done me.

"Don't count the days, make the days count. " Muhammad Ali

As my time in school is almost upon me, I realize there is so much more I still want to learn. I've got so little time and my mind is racing on the things I should focus on. On one hand, I want to just work on all the personal projects that go on in my head. On the other hand, I need to accomplish the requirements for graduating. It's so frustrating that mentally I want to keep working while physically, I am drained. There's got to be some way to get more energy in the day to work more hours. If someone has any ideas on how to do this, I'm all ears.

In this post, I don't have really exciting stuff. I've got some drawings of boxing for a personal piece and some life drawings. When I was doing my life drawings, I liked the act of doing them but looking at them now, I think I got carried away with technique instead of analyzing the model. I need to stop getting too caught up in tricks and just do some good drawings. Anyway, here we go.

In unrelated news, there is a movie I bought last year called, Paris Je T'aime. Its about different neighborhood romances set in Paris and each neighborhood story had a different director. Anyway, the producers of that movie are making a new movie called New York, I Love You. It's same concept, but set in New York. I'm really excited and it helps to have 1901 by Phoenix (they rock!) as the trailer song. Here's the trailer:

And lastly, in totally unrelated news, my friend Daniel Spikes showed me this Hip Hop Violinist. I'm impressed! Here it is.
